“The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation is a non-profit environmental science organization and ocean research foundation established to help preserve, protect and restore the world’s oceans and aquatic resources through research, education, and outreach”
I started working on this site in 2005 for Claire from Webworks & Beyond, who is an extraordinary project manager and designer who I still work with on many projects to this day. I helped convert the Living Oceans Foundation site into a new Joomla!-powered design. Since then, I’ve helped to convert it to run on WordPress, fixed many bugs in other developers code, and introduced some new features for them. The site is currently undergoing another redesign that I’m helping with.
Over the years, I’ve built and managed a variety of hosting environments for LOF — everything from shared hosting to multiple VPS setups and dedicated servers. I set up the servers, perform routine maintenance on both the site and the server, and handle all aspects of administration, tech support, upgrades, migrations, and ongoing improvements and optimizations to keep everything running smoothly.
One of the challenges has been fixing the seemingly endless amount of bugs introduced by another web development agency they hired some time ago. It’s a complex site with a lot of features and they occasionally report issues with something that I fix.
There is an Education Portal where teachers can create courses and students can learn about the oceans and take quizzes that get instantly marked. This is one of the major features they had the other agency develop that has had countless issues that I’ve fixed.
I’ve implemented several new features for them as well. One feature is a system that tracks visitors time and clicks through their Education Portal system and creates spreadsheets periodically or on-demand about this activity.
